About CherylCheryl Shafer Moore, mezzo-soprano, earned her BA in Music from Sonoma State University, her MM in Vocal Performance from the University of New Mexico, and her DMA in Early Music Performance Practices from Case Western Reserve University.
Cheryl is a versatile singer, comfortable both as a soloist and as an ensemble member, working in a variety of musical styles and eras, from medieval rondeaux to grand opera. As a soloist, she has performed in operas, musicals, and in the concert hall with Bay Shore Lyric Opera, Cinnabar Theater, The Jarvis Center, Sonoma Bach, Valhalla Productions, Verismo Opera, and more. Some favorite stage roles are Amneris (Aida), Erda (Siegfried), and The Sorceress (Dido and Æneas). A few past concert appearances have included the alto solos in Vivaldi’s Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, and Bach’s St. John Passion. As an ensemble performer, she has sung with Apollo’s Fire, Opera Cleveland, Opera San José, Quire Cleveland, Schola Cantorum San Francisco, and Vajra Voices. In addition to teaching private lessons in Petaluma, she directs the women’s choir of Cinnabar Theater. In her spare time, you’ll likely find Cheryl playing Baroque doubles at the piano or singing French chansons with her ukulele. As a piano and voice teacher, Cheryl creates a nurturing environment where students of all ages are empowered to learn and grow not just as musicians who intend to pursue a career in music, but as human beings who appreciate and recognize the infinite beauty of music. Piano Lessons Cheryl works with beginners through intermediate levels, starting with students in kindergarten up through adult. Her focus is on developing the musicianship skills to play in a variety of piano styles, learning to read music, and studying common practice period repertoire. Voice Lessons Cheryl works with all ability levels, starting with students in middle school up through adult (younger students may be considered on a case-by-case basis after a trial lesson). As a voice student, if basic musicianship skills aren't already present, a portion of each lesson will be spent learning to read music in addition to singing in harmony, studying vocal technique, and exploring repertoire. While Cheryl's specialty is historical performance practice (early music), I work in all legit vocal styles, from classic musical theater to western art song and opera. |
