Sarah's Teaching Philosophy
Sarah Stiles believes all humans have their own unique, inherent potential in music. She accepts beginners through advanced, age six and up, including adults. Her approach provides a firm structure with lighthearted and encouraging interaction to foster development of fundamental skills such as playing, reading, rhythm, scales, and technique. She encourages expression and meaning through interpretation, imagination, creativity, and history. She is patient, methodical, and systematic to help students build skill, and break down music in order to achieve playing goals. Sarah values broadening her students’ awareness of various styles of music aside from classical, and invites them to work on music of their interest.
In addition to offering piano instruction, training may also include or be specific to composition, music theory, musicianship, and improvisation. Sarah also specializes in directing ensembles of various instruments.
Sarah began piano lessons at age six, and over time developed a serious passion. Yearly she participated in quarterly recitals, Certificate of Merit evaluation and theory testing, and MTAC performance competitions, several of which she won first place. After graduation she trained for the National Guild of Piano Auditions, achieving District and State Membership.
Late in adolescence Sarah found a new inspiration composing music. She went to U.C. Berkeley to earn a B.A. in Music, focusing on piano, and composed on the side. After graduation composition took a forefront in her life, and she went on to earn an M.M. in Composition at the San Francisco Conservatory. Performances of her oeuvre include premieres with many Bay Area ensembles.
